How Often Do You Really Need a Haircut?

Everyone's heard the advice: get a haircut every two weeks. But honestly? That rule was made for someone else's hair — not necessarily yours. The right frequency depends on your style, your hair type, and how sharp you want to look day-to-day.

If you're rocking a tight fade or a skin taper, two to three weeks is about as long as you can stretch it before the blend starts falling apart. Fades are unforgiving that way — the contrast between lengths is what makes them look clean, and once that grows out, the whole cut loses its edge. If your job or lifestyle demands you always look put-together, stick to that two-week schedule without question.

For guys with longer cuts — a crop, a textured top, a slick back — you've got more breathing room. Four to six weeks is a reasonable window, especially if your barber is just cleaning up the shape and keeping your neckline tight. The style holds longer because there's more length to work with and the grow-out is less obvious.

Hair type plays a big role too. Coarse, curly, or tightly coiled hair tends to hold a shape differently than straight or wavy hair. Some guys find their curl pattern actually looks better a week or two after a cut once things settle in. Others need that fresh cut feeling to manage their texture. Pay attention to when YOUR hair starts looking or feeling off — that's your real answer.

Then there's the neckline. Even if the rest of your cut is holding up fine, a fuzzy, grown-out neckline can make you look unkempt fast. Some clients come in just for a quick neckline cleanup between full cuts, and that's a completely valid move if you want to stay looking fresh without the full cost and time of a regular appointment.

The honest answer is there's no universal schedule. What matters is that you're coming in before your cut looks bad, not after. A good barber will also tell you straight up how often they think you should be back based on what you've got going on.

When in doubt, book sooner rather than later. It's a lot easier to maintain a great haircut than to fix one that's been neglected for too long.
